about

Written around 1984, recorded in 1985. Santa Cruz teen ska band Speciall Guest's first and only cassette single. This is what ska sounded like in Northern California 1985. Speciall Guest played hundreds of keggers, proms, and all-ages clubs between San Jose and Monterey over about a five year span. Relive the glorious golden age between the second-wave two-tone style ska and the coming third-wave "punk ska" sound.

lyrics

Not many people I can get along with in this world
All of my foes are beginning to become unfurled
I know who I like and who I don't
And I know what I'll do with my life and what I won't

What do you see when you look in my eyes
All you do is put on a disguise
At least I have the courage to be myself
I don't put the real me on the shelf

I'm always alone and I'm never at home
Because people just can't see past my face
You see me running why do I always run alone
No competition but I always come in second place

What do you see when you look in my eyes
All you do is put on a disguise
At least I have the courage to be myself
I don't put the real me on the shelf

(Sax Solo)

What do you see when you look in my eyes
All you do is put on a disguise
At least I have the courage to be myself
I don't put the real me on the shelf

You're stylish now just look at your clothes
All that is is just a stupid pose
You tell me things that I've already said
All of your own ideas are already dead

What do you see when you look in my eyes
All you do is put on a disguise
At least I have the courage to be myself
I don't put the real me on the shelf

Oh yeah

Speciall Guest Santa Cruz, California

June. 1985. The sweltering California summer gives way to a cool evening. Hop off the #1 bus at the Metro station, buy a burrito for $5 at that little stand, and cross Front St. to Club Culture. It's time to skank to Speciall Guest, Santa Cruz's teenage ska band from 1983-1988. Around the same time as Fishbone and The Untouchables, Speciall Guest was riding the first wave of US Ska. ... more
